Workplace Behavioral Analytics Can Boost Human-Centered Design

Technology is changing so rapidly that often it’s challenging to keep up. It seems like the minute something new is invented; it’s out there in all its glory. As unique technology replaces the older, that means a continuous rotation of training on software and procedures for the workforce. Unfortunately, that can sometimes negate the advantage of utilizing new technologies in the first place.

There’s also the negative impact of technology. One of the most significant areas of negative impact is where it may have a lasting effect on the social media systems. Social media systems are being used more by employers to monitor their employees’ activities. Everything from pictures to messages, private to business-oriented, can be monitored and analyzed in these systems. There is no doubt that this is having an impact on the way people interact and the way their work is done.

Monitoring people’s behavior through social media devices may lead to a lack of productivity. Without enough sleep, people will be tired and not as efficient. Not getting enough sleep can lead to other health issues, such as depression or addiction to alcohol. Addicts have been known to fall asleep while on duty at work. Employees who need more rest than others, especially those who work weekends, might feel the negative impact of technology and the lack of sleep it breeds.

One of the adverse effects of technology is an addiction to it. In a world where time is money, people are willing to do whatever allows them to have the most time. As a result, people will work non-stop, use various devices, access different programs, and sleep only two or three hours each night. This can lead to insomnia, another health issue costing a company thousands in lost productivity and employee time away from work.

According to the influential Nudge Institute, we are being led toward changing the way we think about the world around us. The Nudge Model, coined by psychology professor James Q. Wilson, examines how our choices in various circumstances shape our minds and behaviors. Our thinking determines our response to those circumstances, and the Nudge Model shows that a change in a choice can alter the outcome of that choice. People have the power to shape their futures. However, if they continue to rely on technology, the impact on their brain’s pathways will determine what happens.

Many researchers believe that technology can encourage people to use unethical behavior. The popularity of social media and the influence of texting may lead people to act in a way that would not have been considered before. This could hurt society. According to the Behavioral Sciences Association, a group of researchers who study the impact of technology on culture, the use of social media has the potential to have a negative effect because of the increasing prevalence of bullying.

A human-centered design for work environments addresses these issues by encouraging technology to enhance people’s lives. For example, a more cohesive team can be formed by giving employees access to the Internet and other technologies. Employees may also be encouraged to provide feedback on the products of the company via the company’s Web site. A human-centered design for work environments includes using technology to enhance productivity and the reinforcement of social skills in employees.

In addition to the potential negative impact of technology on the organization, technology addiction can also hurt the employee. Employees who constantly use cell phones or handheld computers are at greater risk of losing productivity due to distraction. Additionally, workers who do not have Internet access while at work may miss out on job opportunities or feel lonely. According to the American Society of Digital Image Engineers, workers who are addicted to technology lose the ability to focus on tasks that require logical reasoning. These effects of technology addiction are only becoming more pronounced as the use of technology continues to grow.
